Frequently Asked Questions

Being a host

Why should I be a host?

There are many reasons to host. The most common reason is to earn some supplemental income. Hosting allows you to monetize extra space in your home and some extra time you may have. For many this extra income makes a huge difference. Other people choose to host because it makes them feel good. Fewer things give more meaning to life than helping someone else.

Why don't I just rent my room on airbnb as a hotel room?

We love airbnb. Not every space is desirable for vacationers. We allow people whose address may not be desirable enough for hotel space to make money.  Also, we offer long-term arrangements with additional services geared for long-term care.

Do I need special training?

The level of care required is no more than would be provided by a family member. No special medical skills are required. We don't want you to do anything that you're not comfortable with. If you have any questions, please contact us.

What types of things might I do?

care may involve helping someone get dressed; go to the doctor; organize pill boxes, etc.  Your most important job is being around. You can charge for all additional services provided.

What if the person requires more care than I can provide?

If you can't provide the level of care required, let us know what the issues are. We may be able to find a host that is comfortable with providing for that individual's needs. If no suitable host can be provided, we will seek one of our partnered licensed facilities.

How do I list my room?

First, create an account. You will need to undergo a background check. Assuming that you have a clean background, you will be given the opportunity to make your profile. Be honest. Be specific. Then, post photos of your home, and specifically, the room for rent and the part of the house that will be used by the senior. Decide what services you are realistically able to provide as well as comfortable with providing.

How do I obtain a booking?

When a search is conducted, a senior will have an opportunity to choose your place. They will contact you through the message center to arrange the visit. At the visit it is important to make sure that you are comfortable with the senior and he or she is comfortable with you. If you are happy with the senior you will be given the opportunity to offer them an agreement for renting the space and services you offer.

I don’t have an assisted living license, is it legal to allow people in my home?

In almost every state, you can rent a space in your home and provide services to up to two (or in many states four) unrelated people..  If you care for more than your state allows, a license is required.  Please review your state’s laws here. (hyperlink to state law spreadsheet) Please contact us for more information.

What is Care-Escrow?

We understand that renting space in your home is concerning to both parties.  We want to make sure that the transaction is smooth and satisfying.  Before a senior can come into your home, they must pay for that time period in advance.  Payment can be by credit card or check.  Only once the check has cleared can they come to your home.  This protects the host.

We are hopeful that the senior will be happy in your home.  If not, if they decide to leave by the midpoint of the arrangement, they will receive a refund for half of their stay.  Once that time period has elapsed, Room2Care.com will issue you a check or direct deposit for the funds that you are owed.

Why do you have reviews?

At Room2Care.com, we strive for complete transparency.  For that to happen, reviews are essential.  Seniors review hosts and hosts review seniors.  We want to know how much care the senior really required, how pleasant, courteous, demanding, etc.  The more honest information that we have the better we will be in finding suitable hosts for that senior in the future. Remember, you wouldn’t want to accept someone who needed more care than you could provide.

How do reviews work?

For each time period that has been booked we will ask the senior to review the host and the host to review the senior.  These reviews will not be posted until AFTER the connection has ended.  We want honesty.

Why so many reviews?

If a senior spends 6 months with you, then you would each review each other six times.  Why?  Think of it as a report card.  You may do poorly first semester and then do great in the second.  We want to capture things as fully as possible.  We are also aware that sometimes a senior gets ill and has to go to a more intensive care situation.  That can happen without warning or notice and it is essential that we gather information on all of our care-partners to better serve all.

For The Senior

Why would I want to use Room2Care Community Care?

Often older individuals reach a point where they need a little bit of support. In the old days, that came from the extended family. For many people today, that's not an option. What ends up happening is the senior attempts to stay independent beyond their ability and their quality of life begins to deteriorate due to unneeded stress and headaches.  Instead, with this preventable failure, the senior ends up in a nursing home.  Room2Care.com believes that just a little bit of support during this vulnerable period is enough to alter the trajectory of requiring early placement in an institution.

Is this a new concept?

People have been living with others since the beginning of time.  It has often been an informal relationship.  Room2Care.com is establishing a marketplace for a relationship that has existed for generations.

What does it cost?

Room2Care is a marketplace.  Some areas cost more.  A large room may cost more than a small room.  More services cost more than few services.  We will provide guidelines, but in the end, the final agreement is between the senior and the host.  If issues arise, we will do everything possible to rectify them.

Has the host been background checked?

At Room2Care.com, all parties are background checked.  We want you to be comfortable with your host and the host to be comfortable with the senior.  If there are any concerns, please notify Room2Care immediately.  Also, Room2Care provides user reviews as an added safety feature for all parties to maintain transparency and a high level of quality.

Do I get to see the room prior to renting?

We encourage all hosts to provide detailed listing of their homes.  Prior to moving in, we want the senior to meet the host and to see the home.  We want both parties to feel comfortable.  If you are not comfortable, please complete the review on the host so that we can identify the relevant issues.
